Fire Pump Maintnance

Weekly Run

  1. Call alarm service and inform them that system is being tested.
  2. Announce to occupants of the building to disregard fire alarms for the next hour.
  3. Open main drain slightly to drop pressure and watch jockey pump turn on.
  4. Close valve and watch jockey pump build pressure and shut off.
  5. Open main drain again and drop pressure until jockey pump turns on.
  6. Open main drain a little more so pressure drops faster than jockey pump can maintain.
  7. Watch fire pump turn on. 
  8. Close main drain valve.
  9. Check that casing relief valve is running a full stream of water.
  10. Check that packing is dripping.
  11. Grease pump bearings with one pump of the grease gun handle.
  12. Observe that one pump gauge is reading much higher than the other one.
  13. Push stop button on controller and observe that fire pump shuts down.
  14. Call alarm service to inform them the test is finished.

If any problems are discovered, call Complete Pump Service.

In case of fire

  1. Go to pump room and make sure fire pump is running.
  2. If it is not running, push start button.
  3. If start button does not make pump run, engage manual run device.
  4. Lock manual run device with latch provided.
  5. Any time pump is started by start button or manual run device, it will not shut off  automatically. It must be manually shut down. Always hold the stop button in when operating disconnect switch and circuit breaker.

Annual fire pump test

In January, call Complete Pump Service at (630) 628-1600 ext. 100 to schedule the test.
