Fire Pump Test Description

A fire pump test requires two technicians for safety and efficiency.  One person in the pump room, should be a qualified pump technician.  Using calibrated, certified instruments, information is gathered measuring:

  • Suction pressure
  • Discharge pressure
  • Amperage
  • Voltage
  • Shaft speed.

The other person is usually outside the building assembling fire hoses, nozzles and safety equipment.  This person collects data concerning the flow of water from the fire hoses.

All of the information gathered is assembled and an evaluation of the fire pump performance is documented.  The hope is that all the equipment is in top condition and performs as it did when new before the factory shipped it out.  The object of the test is to discover weak points or failures and correct them before the equipment is needed to extinguish a fire.

In high rise buildings, one or more roof flows may also be required.

Usually, a representative from the fire prevention bureau having jurisdiction is present to witness the test.

A properly executed test will also include operation of all features of the controller and the jockey pump system.

The final test certificate should show nameplate information from the:

  • Fire pump
  • Fire pump driver
  • Fire pump control panel
  • Jockey pump
  • Jockey pump motor
  • Jockey pump controller

It should also display all readings for:

  • Suction pressure
  • Discharge pressure
  • Three leg amperage
  • Three leg voltage
  • Shaft speed
  • Pitot readings
  • Gallons per minute
  • Net pressure
  • Fire pump start pressure
  • Fire pump stop pressure
  • Timer setting
  • Jockey pump start pressure
  • Jockey pump stop pressure
  • Names of individuals conducting test
  • Names of witnesses
  • Any problems discovered
